Embarking on an adventurous journey through the stunning landscapes of Quassussuaq, NUUK, Greenland, is an experience that will leave you breathless and in awe of nature's magnificence. Aptly named "the large mountain ridge," Quassussuaq offers intrepid hikers an 8.1km trail that winds through Paradise Valley, leading to the breathtaking sight of the second largest fjord system. While the hike is undeniably rewarding, it's important to be well-prepared to fully enjoy this 5-hour excursion.
We are currently on the Caribbean Princess cruise ship discovering Greenland. As this is our first time experience in Greenland, we thought we would like to experience the magic of nature through an excursion booked through Princess Cruises, that would not only guarantee our safe return to the ship, but to keep us amongst other friends and passengers to enjoy this incredible hike.
How to Prepare For Your Hike In Quassussuaq
As soon as we returned to the ship from our hiking excursion, we were asked by several people as to whether or not we would recommend this day trip. So, here are our 6 simple suggestions as to how to be well prepared for this hike in Quassussuaq, "Paradise Valley".
Embrace Nature's Majesty in Quassussuaq
Quassussuaq, meaning "the large mountain ridge," lives up to its name by offering hikers a landscape that is nothing short of majestic. The towering peaks, sprawling valleys, and serene fjord system paint a picture of untouched beauty that's worth every step of the journey. As you trek through Paradise Valley, take the time to soak in the pristine vistas and let the grandeur of nature rejuvenate your spirit.
Dress In Layers
When embarking on a challenging hike through Quassussuaq, it's crucial to dress in layers to adapt to the ever-changing weather conditions. The remote location and varying altitudes can bring about rapid shifts in temperature. Begin with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your body, followed by insulating layers to trap warmth.
We wore lightweight, breathable jackets, as we were expecting rain our our trek. We had multiple layers on as the temperature changed a few times on us. We would suggest sturdy hiking boots or shoes for this trip!
Bug Protection Is Key
One of the most crucial aspects of a successful hike in Quassussuaq is ensuring you're well-equipped to deal with the local insects. The environment does attract bugs, so don't forget to pack a reliable face net to shield yourself from the constant swarm. This simple addition to your gear can make a world of difference, allowing you to focus on the scenic beauty around you without any distractions.
For us, we found it very difficult to maneuver through all of the rocks and boulders while trying to swat off mini black flies and mosquitos. Thankfully, we brought bug spray, but it had to be re-applied every 20 minutes or so.
Bring Snacks for Sustenance
Embarking on an 8.1km hike requires energy, and that means carrying a supply of nutritious snacks to keep you fueled throughout the journey. Granola bars, trail mix, and dried fruits are excellent choices that are lightweight and easy to carry. These snacks will not only provide sustenance but also add a touch of excitement to your hike as you take quick breaks to refuel and enjoy a mini-picnic amidst the natural wonders.
On our particular tour, we were given each a bottle so that we could taste the natural water of the stream in Quassussuaq, and we were each given a bar of our choice. In addition to this, we had brought our own water, Larabars, and a couple slices of bread that we brought from the ship.
Prepare for Basic Facilities
Quassussuaq's beauty lies in its untouched wilderness, and this means that you will not be finding any modern conveniences during your hike. Be prepared for the absence of trees and washrooms along the trail. This might require a change in mindset and a bit of extra planning. Remember to pack essentials such as toilet paper, tissue paper for constantly blowing your nose, and hand sanitizer to ensure you're respecting the environment while staying comfortable.

Our hike to the second largest fjord system in Quassussuaq took us around 5 hours, making it a substantial undertaking. Plan your day accordingly, setting out early to make the most of the daylight hours. The trail might present challenges, but the vistas that await at the end are more than worth the effort.
Please note that we were on an organized tour with guides who could suggest the best way to get around the "trail." Being on the excursion also ensured that we were going to make it back to the ship on time.
Conclusion
